Leverkusen’s out – Chelsea and Inter sovereign
After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Leverkusen missed the last 16 at home with a 1-1 defeat at the hands of FK Krasnodar from the Russian first division, who were two favourites in Inter Milan and Chelsea FC. Benfica kicked out Galatasaray, Slavia Prague and Stade Rennes cheered for away coups in the final 16th round.
After the zero number in the first leg, Leverkusen thanked Hradecky in the first round, who twice prevented Hradecky from lagging behind Claesson (25th, 45th). A clear plus in possession of the ball only resulted in a big chance for Bayer through Alario (36th). The Argentinian failed in the second run on the crossbar (72.), before Suleymanov let the visitors cheer with a direct free-kick (84.). Was that it for the Bosz eleven? Not yet, Aranguiz equalised (87th), but Leverkusen’s final offensive went up in smoke just like the dreams of the round of sixteen burst.
Inter wins without a hitch
Inter had won 1:0 at Rapid. Vecino (11.) and Ranocchia (18.) quickly destroyed the remaining Viennese hopes for a coup in Milan. Perisic’s clever jack (80th) delighted the hearts of the Tifosi, Politano set the final point (87th) with 4:0.
Betis must strike the sails
As in the first leg (3-3), Rennes led hosts Sevilla 2-0 (Bensebaini 22nd, Hunou 30th) before Lo Celso shortened for Betis (41st). It remained exciting until the end, then Niang with his 3:1 deep in injury time for the decision (90.+4).
Chelsea and Benfica clarified
Chelsea (in Malmö) and Benfica (at Galatasaray) had each laid the foundation for the round of 16 with a 2-1 away win. Malmö tried in vain to surprise the Blues with an opening offensive. Giroud took the lead (55th) for Londoners, who gradually took control. After Bengtsson’s traffic light (73.) and Barkley’s 2:0 (74.), everything was clear, Hudson-Odio added for the Sarri protégés once more (84.).
Benfica was after the 2:1 with Galatasaray also in the home “Estadio da Luz” for a long time master of the situation, before the Turks lit some fire after one hour. Too little to shake Lisbon, which has reached the round of the last 16 after the 0:0.
Unhappy Vukovic – Skoda makes everything clear
Genk supposedly had the better cards after a 0:0 in the first leg with Slavia Prague and the lead by Trossard (10th). But Coufal (23rd) and Traore (53rd) turned the tables after two unfortunate actions by KRC goalkeeper Vukovic. Slavia’s engine now ran smoothly – in the truest sense of the word: Skoda demoralised the Belgians with a double strike (64th, 68th).
Fran Sol lets the sun shine in Kiev
A 2:2 had taken Kiev at Olympiakos, a 0:0 would have been enough to advance. Fran Sol’s goal (32nd) made things even more comfortable for Dynamo, who finally kept Piraeus at a distance.
