How Prost assesses Vettel’s opportunities
Only very few people can give better information about Formula 1 than the four-time world champion Alain Prost. In it he talks about the times of his own career as well as about the hard fight between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
Alain Prost was completely wrong to lose focus in this country. The days when Germany enviously looked back on a four-time World Champion and could hardly imagine that there would ever be a single title for a German rider are not over yet. Even after his grandiose career with twelve Formula 1 years, Prost has always remained close to the action: whether as the owner of his own team or as a consultant to Ferrari, Peugeot, McLaren or Renault.
The 64-year-old can easily put himself in the position of Sebastian Vettel at the moment. He also tried in vain for two years to become world champion with Ferrari. “Ferrari is like a code word for uniqueness. The pressure – nowhere else is it so high, as a driver you can feel it too. Everywhere in the world they talk about Ferrari, everywhere they expect miracles from you. Rest is rare. And then there’s the Italian way, where the heart often triumphs over the mind. You’ve known all this for decades, and yet it’s hard to keep your concentration high in this environment,” says Prost, explaining why it’s still a bit harder for Ferrari to drive to the title than elsewhere.
“Vettel definitely has the class to take his chance.
Vettel enters his fifth season with the Italians in 2019 and can comfort himself with Michael Schumacher: It also took Vettel four years to get started before he reached the finish line with Ferrari for the first time in 2000. Cheers to the German, who won the world championship title four times just like he did, for the fight with Lewis Hamilton: “Vettel is definitely one of the best drivers of the past decade, I see him almost as strong as Lewis Hamilton. What he lacked most recently, however, was the full support of his team in difficult situations.” Prost’s outlook for 2019 should nevertheless please the Vettel fans: “Vettel will get a new chance this year, he definitely has the class to use it”.
