Deschamps ennobles Griezmann and praises Löw
World champion France starts on Friday (20.45 h) with the match in Moldova into the European Championship qualification. In the run-up to the match, which is of course a compulsory task for the Tricolore team, coach Didier Deschamps praised Antoine Griezmann – and Joachim Löw.
On July 15th, the French team chose themselves as world champions in Moscow. In an entertaining final, Deschamps’ charges won against Croatia 4:2 – and won the second World Championship title after 1998. For the coach, it was the second coup after he was still active as a player the first time.
Now Deschamps and his charges start the time after the World Cup. The coach would like to continue until the next final round 2022 in Qatar. “Continuing until the next World Cup is of course something I would like,” Deschamps said in the run-up to the meeting in Moldova on Friday. But now the qualification for the European Championship is on the agenda. France are the clear favourites in Group H with Albania, Andorra, Iceland, Moldova and Turkey.
Löw as an example for Deschamps
After such a great success as in Moscow, the Equipe Tricolore now has to prove its quality again. Even Deschamps, who has been national coach since 2012, is challenged – and he still has a long way to go. He also takes an example from the German national team. “This is a good example of how continuity works at a high level. Joachim Löw led the team to the 2014 World Cup title. Lately it’s been difficult for him, like at the last World Cup. He is someone who has proven a lot and I am glad that he will stay at the top of the German team”, the coach of the French says in praise of his colleague.
“I still have the same passion.”
However, the DFB eleven also shows how difficult it is to prove the high level time and again. As defending champions, Germany already failed in the preliminary round in Russia. France naturally wants to avoid that in four years’ time. In 2002, the French already suffered this fate once. “Even though I am at the top, I always have the same passion, the same desire. And I’m convinced that we can still create many beautiful things with this group,” Deschamps still enjoys this job with the star ensemble around Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappé and Griezmann.
Speaking of Griezmann. For the attacker from Atletico, the national coach had some particularly praising words in store. The offensive man does not yet enjoy the esteem he deserves in his home country. “I am much older than Antoine Griezmann and can tell him that French players who play abroad are always underestimated here,” his coach explains. “Those who play in France are watched much more. For Deschamps, however, there’s no doubt about his goalscorer’s great class: “Antoine played a great season last year. He won the Europa League (3:0 in the final against Marseille, Doppelpack Griezmann, ed.) and the World Cup and made the difference in both competitions. Considering what personal awards he could have won. But he was unlucky, he certainly deserved it. He is one of the best strikers in the world. He knows that, he has great quality.”
