Handshake with aftertaste: Kerber loses his frame
Again Angelique Kerber lost against Canadian Bianca Andreescu. At the handshake she had to tell the 18-year-old something.
Angelique Kerber was pissed off. She didn’t even try to hide her bad mood – especially not from her conqueror. The match point was followed by an angry look and an icy handshake, garnished with unflattering words. “Biggest drama queen ever,” Kerber hissed into Canadian Bianca Andreescu’s face. In the third round of the WTA tournament in Miami, the Wimbledon winner had not only lost her revenge against the 18-year-old super talent with 4:6, 6:4, 1:6 – but also her composure.
After her defeat in the final against Andreescu a week ago in Indian Wells, Kerber congratulated her with two fleeting cheek kisses and then calmly declared that despite the final 4:6, 3:6, 4:6 the tournament would have given her “a lot of self-confidence”. Miami, on the other hand, left the 31-year-old Kielerin annoyed by problems on her thigh and especially by Andreescu, who simply didn’t want to surrender.
Andreescu’s reaction: “I will let my tennis speak”.
During the match Andreescu had her shoulder treated, she had also been beaten in Indian Wells – and still won. For Kerber, who had fought her way back in the second set after a 4-1 draw, it seemed a little too much drama. Andreescu didn’t want to comment on the incident at net, she wasn’t sure what Kerber exactly said, she said and assured: “I’ll let my tennis speak”.
Kerber should do the same for the upcoming tournaments on the less loved sand. The title at the French Open, the only one in her Grand Slam collection that she still lacked, was her dream goal after the engagement of coach Rainer Schüttler. A cool head is needed for this.
