Hoeneß: “I would buy Mbappé immediately”
In an interview Uli Hoeneß talks about the rebuilding of FC Bayern, Niko Kovac’s “burden” – and about PSG striker Kylian Mbappé.
Did the record champion oversleep the necessary upheaval? Uli Hoeneß is surprised that this question has been with FC Bayern since the beginning of the season, “it sometimes even stunk terribly”. “In the great 3-2 international match in the Netherlands, five Bayern players were in the starting eleven, including only the older Manuel Neuer and four youngsters: Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Süle, Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry, all born in 1995,” said the Bavarian president in an interview with dpa. “No other club provided more than one player. The club that was most criticised for not having made the transition is the one that is most pleased with the rebuilding of the national team”.
From their point of view, Hoeneß and the other responsible persons in Bavaria have deliberately chosen a difficult path for the reconstruction. “You could make a transition in such a way that you hit people in the head who you have to be grateful to and who have achieved a lot,” he says. “But that’s not my world. Here at FC Bayern, I have always fought for personalities like Arjen (Robben) and Franck (Ribery), including a Rafinha, to be given a decent exit. And that in a year of transition, without experiencing a total sporting slump.” Accordingly, a lot of patience is needed for the work of coach Niko Kovac, who has been “burdened” with “making the transition with Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery”.
And next year? “We are of the opinion that the time has come for FC Bayern to put its hard-earned money into the market to bring a new, young team back onto the pitch. That’s why Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez come together for 115 million euros, “in addition,” Hoeneß stresses, “Corentin Tolisso is practically a newcomer who has been injured for almost the entire season. And one or the other will perhaps be added.” PSG striker Kylian Mbappé (20) will not be one of them. “I would buy Mbappé immediately. The player is great,” enthuses Hoeneß. “But we don’t have the money for him.”
