Geoff Shreeves suggests that if Manchester City are proven to have violated Financial Fair Play regulations, they should be demoted from the Premier League.
The current champions of both European and English football, Manchester City, are facing allegations of 115 breaches of financial regulations by the Premier League. The case is expected to proceed later this year.
Amidst calls for City’s expulsion from the top-flight in the event of guilt, former Sky Sports personality Shreeves believes that such a severe punishment should be seriously considered.
He told Lucky Block: “I don’t believe the Premier League would have any other choice [than to relegate City if they are found guilty]. They have already set a precedent with Everton through points deductions. They specifically pushed for a deduction of 12 points. Therefore, it must be a possibility.”
The proceedings for City’s case are scheduled for later this year, but it is unlikely that the previous season’s winners of both the Premier League and the Champions League will receive a verdict until the following year. In the meantime, they will continue their quest to defend the three trophies they won last season, starting with a league match against Chelsea on Saturday.
Many doubt that the Premier League will take any action regarding the Manchester City saga, even if they are found guilty of the charges.
Personally, I can envision a scenario where the club is forced into a transfer ban, resulting in them only being able to sign free agents. If this were to happen, it could mean that the young players from the club’s academy get even more playing time.
