Piastri has been moved down from third position to seventh in Austria due to a violation of the boundaries of the track.
McLaren has filed a complaint with the FIA regarding the decision to invalidate Oscar Piastri’s fastest lap during qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix in Formula 1, citing a breach of track limits.
Piastri appeared to be continuing his successful weekend at the Red Bull Ring by securing the third spot on the leaderboard, just behind his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
However, Piastri’s final lap time was subsequently nullified by the stewards, who determined that he had exceeded the track limits at Turn 6, resulting in his original time being downgraded to seventh.
The Australian driver criticized the situation, describing it as “embarrassing,” and noted that the circuit had implemented additional gravel traps this season without utilizing them to establish the boundary.
McLaren opted to approach the FIA in order to obtain definitive evidence that Piastri had crossed the white line, and has now taken the step of officially protesting the outcome.
