Lewis Hamilton’s recent lack of wins has sparked discussions about his future in Formula 1. Despite holding numerous racing records, Hamilton has struggled to secure a victory since his 104th win in 2021. However, there may be a positive turn of events for him, as he recently signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari for the 2025 season and beyond.
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari comes as a surprise, considering his long-standing dedication to Mercedes over the past 11 years. Speculation about his potential departure had circulated in the Formula 1 community, but it was largely dismissed as unimaginable. Nevertheless, the deal has been finalized, and official statements from all parties involved have been released. This decision brings to mind a conversation that F1 columnist Matt Bishop had with Hamilton in Japan, where the British racer expressed his aspirations to drive for Ferrari.
Ferrari, being the oldest and most successful team in F1 history, has always been a dream destination for many drivers. Despite achieving seven World Championships without ever being part of the Scuderia, Hamilton had previously expressed his interest in joining them.
With Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes, there are several talented drivers vying for the vacant seat. Daniel Ricciardo, unfortunately, is unable to make the move due to his existing contract with Red Bull, as confirmed by Helmut Marko. However, Alex Albon has reportedly made efforts to catch Mercedes’ attention as a potential replacement.
Another promising racer, Kimi Antonelli, currently competing in Formula 2, is also being considered for the Mercedes seat. Antonelli has displayed remarkable talent, winning multiple karting Championships, as well as the German and Spanish F4 titles. Mercedes deemed him ready for the challenge, bypassing Formula 3 and placing him in DAMS for FIA Formula 2.
As existing contracts of various drivers come to an end in the coming days, the driver situation in Formula 1 is expected to become even more complex. It remains to be seen if any major shifts will occur in the F1 world, similar to the impact of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari.
