Mercedes Test Debut for Young Driver Amid Speculation of 2025 Seat
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a promising 17-year-old driver, has successfully completed his first Formula 1 test with Mercedes in Austria. The test has fueled rumors that Antonelli is being considered as a potential replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who will be joining Ferrari next season. Antonelli has been a part of the Mercedes Junior Team since 2018 and has made significant progress in his career, moving from the Formula Regional European Championship to Formula 2. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed earlier this month that Antonelli would have the opportunity to drive an F1 car for the first time at the Red Bull Ring, which is the venue for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Antonelli’s test took place using the title-winning W12 car from 2021, as per the regulations. Wolff had previously expressed the team’s intention to allow Antonelli to experience a competitive machine, especially given Mercedes’ struggles since the rule changes in 2022. The test was scheduled for two days at the Red Bull Ring, but the first day was disrupted due to unexpected snowfall, forcing the team to suspend their planned program. However, the second day proved to be successful, with Antonelli completing numerous laps.
In a video shared by Mercedes on their social media channels, Antonelli expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. He described the experience as incredible and stated that he enjoyed every second of it. Despite the initial setback caused by the snow, Antonelli thanked the team for their hard work and expressed his anticipation for what lies ahead.
Wolff also revealed that Antonelli will have more opportunities to test an F1 car in the coming months. The team is carefully evaluating his skills and potential for a promotion to Formula 1 in the next season. The plan for Antonelli’s involvement in Formula 1 has been in place for a while and has not undergone significant changes in recent weeks. Additional testing days have been added, but whether or not Antonelli will be driving a Formula 1 car next year is still to be determined.
