In Major League Baseball (MLB), there are pitchers who, regardless of their age and experience, consistently receive opportunities and eventually secure contracts.
MLB teams have recognized the importance of having more than just the five pitchers in their rotation. Factors such as injuries, suspensions, trades, slumps, and other unforeseen circumstances can impact the depth of a team on a daily basis. The most successful organizations ensure they have between eight and 10 capable starting pitchers available across the injured list, active roster, and minor leagues.
This explains why pitchers like Johnny Cueto continue to receive chances at the highest level. They possess durable arms capable of pitching a high number of innings, and their bodies can withstand the demands of a grueling MLB season.
Cueto, in particular, has yet to secure a contract but remains determined. MLB insider Jon Morosi tweeted, “Free agent RHP Johnny Cueto is continuing his throwing progression and hopes to sign with a team for what would be his 17th MLB season. Cueto, who turns 38 this month, ranks 5th all-time in wins among Dominican pitchers.”
Cueto is currently going through a typical offseason, hoping that his agent will present him with a suitable offer. Looking at his performance in 2023 with the Miami Marlins, it appears that he may be nearing the end of his career. He recorded a 6.02 ERA in 52.1 innings. However, the previous year with the Chicago White Sox, he demonstrated his competency by achieving a 3.35 ERA in 158.1 innings.
It is reasonable to assume that Cueto is still a better pitcher than one with a 6.00 ERA, but not at the level he performed in 2022. After all, he will soon be turning 38 years old.
Any contending team would be wise to sign him to a minor league contract, although Cueto undoubtedly hopes for a guaranteed MLB contract.
