The Oakland Athletics have recently re-signed left-handed pitcher Francisco Pérez on a minor league agreement, as reported by Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Additionally, the team has brought back right-hander Aaron Brooks on a non-roster deal.
Pérez holds the most recent experience at the major league level between the two players. He appeared in a career-high 17 games for Oakland towards the end of last season. During this time, Pérez allowed a total of 12 runs (with 11 of them being earned) in 16 2/3 innings. He recorded 14 strikeouts while issuing eight walks. Although Pérez was initially kept on the 40-man roster during the winter, he was later removed to accommodate the signing of Alex Wood. Subsequently, Pérez chose to enter free agency but quickly returned to sign a new contract with the team.
Standing at 6’2″, Pérez has made appearances in the MLB for the past three seasons. He played for Cleveland in 2021 and Washington two years ago before joining Oakland. His opportunities at the major league level have largely been due to his ability to generate swings and misses in the minor leagues. Throughout his time in Triple-A, Pérez has struck out nearly 30% of his opponents. However, he has struggled with control, resulting in a mediocre 4.42 ERA at that level. Pérez has issued walks to over 15% of the batters he has faced in Triple-A.
Brooks, who will turn 34 in April, has pitched in parts of three seasons for the Athletics at the major league level. Overall, he has participated in five big league campaigns, accumulating 180 innings with a 6.55 ERA. Brooks’ most recent appearance in the majors was with the Cardinals in 2022. During the 2023 season, he played in Triple-A for the Padres, serving as a long reliever and recording a 4.95 ERA over 63 2/3 innings.
