Fernando Alonso of Spain, driving for the Aston Martin F1 Team AMR24, was impressed by the strong performance during practice for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. However, he remains cautious about the team’s chances for the race on Saturday. Alonso was the fastest driver in FP2, leading George Russell of Mercedes by more than two-tenths of a second. Aston Martin had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Alonso achieving podium finishes in six of the first eight rounds. However, this season has been more challenging for the team, with their redesigned car, the AMR24, only being the fifth fastest in the previous race in Bahrain. Returning to Jeddah, Alonso once again showed his pace, finishing second in FP1 and leading the field in FP2. He acknowledged that it was only practice and that the team would need to consider various factors when it comes to qualifying. Alonso expressed satisfaction with the car and the setup possibilities for the upcoming race. He admitted that he had no idea where the team stands compared to others, as he had not seen any data. Alonso’s teammate, Lance Stroll, had a close call in FP1 when he made contact with the barriers at Turn 22. Despite this, Stroll commented that it was always fun to drive on this track. He finished the evening session in sixth place, half a second behind Alonso.
