Alonso’s name emerged as a potential contender to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025 once the British driver’s move was confirmed. Despite prioritizing the renewal of his contract with Aston Martin, Alonso did not dismiss the possibility of a move.
Currently in his second year with Aston Martin and his third since returning to Formula 1 in 2021 with Alpine, Alonso took a break from the sport for two years after the 2018 season when he was still with McLaren.
As the 2005 and 2006 F1 Champion, Alonso has demonstrated that age is not a hindrance, performing at his best and achieving eight podium finishes in 2023 when Aston Martin’s car was still competitive. However, the team’s development has faltered since then.
His impressive track record makes him an appealing prospect for any Formula 1 team. Despite previously claiming he could continue driving until the age of 50, Alonso seems to have reconsidered due to the demanding nature of the sport, especially with the introduction of longer seasons and new regulations in 2026.
During a media session in Bahrain, Alonso was questioned about his future plans and the likelihood of joining Mercedes in 2025. He responded by stating that he first needs to decide if he wants to continue racing, a decision he will make after a few more races.
While he currently feels great, Alonso acknowledges the challenges of the demanding calendar. The new regulations in 2026 may also influence his decision. He intends to wait until after a few races before making a final determination.
Alonso will celebrate his 43rd birthday in July. With 378 grands prix under his belt and 32 race victories, he is still in pursuit of his 33rd win, which has eluded him thus far.
