Fernando Alonso, a member of the Aston Martin F1 Team, has disclosed how adopting a partially plant-based diet contributed to his exceptional physical test results prior to the start of the 2024 Formula 1 season. With the exception of a year away from the sport in 2002 and a sabbatical between 2019-2020, Alonso has been actively competing in F1 since 2001 and is now preparing for his 21st season. Despite reaching the age of 42 last year, the Spanish driver has defied the common belief that athletes tend to decline once they enter their 30s. Alonso’s performance last season was outstanding, taking advantage of Aston Martin’s resurgence to achieve eight podium finishes, outscoring his teammate Lance Stroll by 206 points to 74. While his contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of this year, Alonso has indicated that he is getting himself in shape to potentially extend his time in the series. “I feel great, better than ever,” he shared with selected media. “The results of all the physical tests we conducted this year were the best we have ever achieved. I trained differently this year and also added a nutritionist to my team, which changed my perspective and preparation for my body. Every action I have taken in recent months has been geared towards preparing myself better than ever for a long season and to be in top form if I decide to continue driving. If I commit to a future project, whether it’s next year or the coming years, I need to ensure that I am fully ready to make that commitment. I will not continue driving in Formula 1 just for the sake of it or for fun. I am not that kind of driver or person. If I choose to keep racing, it’s because I know, from my own perspective, that I can give 200% to the team both on and off the track, including simulator work, marketing efforts, and delivering results on the track. I am preparing myself for that possibility and will assess the available options if I decide to continue racing.”
Alonso’s decision to incorporate a nutritionist into his team has resulted in a transformation of his diet, opting for a plant-based approach. This change mirrors the practices of fellow racer Lewis Hamilton, who had adopted this lifestyle choice long ago.
Regarding the nutritionist’s guidance, Alonso expressed his uncertainty, acknowledging their expertise in explaining the benefits of dietary modifications. He suggested that he may lean towards a plant-based diet or a similar path, aiming to derive more energy from the food he consumes and tap into his body’s reserves to enhance endurance. However, he did not intend to strictly adhere to these changes, allowing for some flexibility.
Alonso’s positive test results have reinforced his belief that he can continue competing in Formula 1 until he reaches the age of 50. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the demanding schedule of the sport might hinder this aspiration.
When asked about his future plans and the age at which he envisions retiring from racing, Alonso admitted uncertainty. In the past, he believed that 42 or 41 would be his limit. However, witnessing his own motivation and strong performance last year has led him to consider the possibility of racing for a few more years. During the recent winter period, he surpassed expectations in various physical tests. As a result, he now believes that with sufficient motivation and commitment, it may be feasible to continue driving until the age of 48, 49, or even 50. However, he acknowledged that Formula 1 demands complete dedication and sacrifices in other areas of life. Having devoted 24 seasons to the sport, he is content with the sacrifices made thus far. While he may continue for a few more years, he is unsure if he will race until 50 due to the demanding calendar and other curiosities in life.
Given the record-breaking 24-race calendar for the upcoming season, Alonso believes that drivers will need to strategically plan their schedules to avoid burnout. He emphasized the importance of efficient travel and spending the appropriate amount of time in each location. In his case, he intends to minimize his time in certain countries, such as Japan, Australia, and China, to mitigate the effects of jet lag and reduce the number of days spent away from home. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of maintaining a consistent food routine to sustain energy levels throughout the season. These two factors will be crucial for him to navigate the challenges posed by the lengthy calendar.
