The Angels have acquired infielder Livan Soto from the Orioles through waivers, according to an announcement from both teams. To make space for Soto on the team’s 40-man roster, left-hander Jose Quijada has been placed on the 60-day injured list by Anaheim.
Soto’s stint in Baltimore was short-lived, as he returns to the Angels a little over two weeks after being designated for assignment to accommodate right-hander Jose Cisnero on the team’s 40-man roster. The 23-year-old infielder is known for his defensive skills not only at shortstop but also at second and third base, as he has spent a significant amount of time at each position throughout his professional career. He also possesses solid contact abilities, evident by his low strikeout rate of only 19.3% across six seasons in the minor leagues. However, he lacks power, having hit only 24 home runs in his career in both the majors and minors.
Soto’s experience in the major leagues has been limited thus far. While he has appeared in games with the Angels in the past two seasons, posting an impressive slash line of .375/.414/.531, this production has come in just 71 plate appearances spread across 22 games. His remarkable slash line has been boosted by an unsustainable .469 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) throughout his time in the big leagues, suggesting that his true talent level is likely closer to his career slash line of .245/.339/.332 in the minor leagues.
