The world of combat sports can anticipate the release of a new MMA film in the future. As reported by Variety, a feature-length movie titled “Strawweight” will star Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz. Additionally, former UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas will serve as a fight consultant and executive producer.
According to Variety, the film will depict the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One of them is a young woman (Moretz) whose life is forever changed when she discovers her passion for the UFC. The other is a former champion (Nyong’o) who is determined to reclaim her title by reinventing herself. Both fighters share the same desire for respect, but only one can emerge victorious.
Nyong’o, aged 40, gained widespread recognition in early 2014 when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “12 Years a Slave.” Since then, she has been regarded as one of the industry’s most talented actors and has made significant contributions to the Star Wars and Marvel franchises through her roles in “Black Panther.” She has received accolades from the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, and numerous other organizations. Additionally, she has been nominated for a Tony Award.
Moretz, who recently turned 27, is no stranger to physically demanding roles. Her portrayal of the anti-hero superhero Hit-Girl in the “Kick-Ass” franchise was a breakthrough moment in her career. Her filmography includes notable works such as “500 Days of Summer,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Hugo” directed by Martin Scorsese, “Dark Shadows” directed by Tim Burton, and “The Equalizer.”
Namajunas achieved the strawweight title in August 2017 with a stunning knockout victory over Joanna Jedrzejczyk. She successfully defended the belt in a rematch but later lost it to Jessica Andrade in May 2019. After a hiatus of over a year, Namajunas returned to defeat Andrade in a rematch. However, this was after Andrade had already lost the belt to Weili Zhang. Namajunas reclaimed the title from Zhang in April 2021 and emerged victorious in their rematch. Unfortunately, she lost the belt to Carla Esparza less than two years ago. Namajunas subsequently transitioned to the flyweight division but suffered a defeat against Manon Fiorot via decision in the past autumn.
