Francesco Bagnaia has expressed his disagreement with critics who have suggested that the current world champion would oppose Marc Marquez joining the Factory Ducati team. Some reporters have insinuated that this could potentially lead to conflicts between the two riders, both of whom have achieved success and competitiveness in MotoGP. These rumors gained traction after Bagnaia and Marquez collided at Portimao during the Portuguese Grand Prix.
“I came across a video claiming that I don’t want Marc on the factory team, but that’s nonsense,” Bagnaia stated. He continued, “I couldn’t care less. My only objective is to surpass them all, consistently strive to be the best, and continue on this path. I genuinely have no preference.”
Bagnaia added, “I am collaborating effectively with Enea [Bastianini]. And if the team decides to change my teammate, we will have to start anew. Nevertheless, my ambition always remains to be stronger than them.”
During the previous race in Jerez, Bagnaia and Marquez captivated the Spanish crowd as they fiercely battled each other until the checkered flag. Ultimately, Bagnaia emerged victorious, overtaking Marquez in the final few laps.
Marquez has already participated in four races with the Ducati Desmosedici GP23 under the satellite team Gresini Racing. This team employs the previous season’s Ducati machinery and Marquez has already secured a podium finish in Jerez and a Sprint podium in Portugal.
After 11 years with Repsol Honda, Marquez departed from the team at the end of 2023. Reflecting on his progress with Ducati, Marquez remarked, “Gradually, I am feeling more comfortable on the racetrack. I feel stronger and much more confident, which was my objective for this year.”
He continued, “Obviously, in 2025 and ’26, if I continue to improve, my goals will shift. I would then aim to contend for the championship. In order to do so, it is crucial to have the latest equipment on my bike, which increases my chances.”
Enea Bastianini took over Jack Miller’s position in the factory Ducati squad for the 2023 season but missed nine rounds of the championship due to injury. With Jorge Martin’s intense battle against Bagnaia in 2023 and Marquez’s impressive start to 2024, the second seat at Ducati has become a significant topic of discussion.
Championship leader Jorge Martin disclosed, “The logical progression would be to join the factory Ducati team. I came very close in ’22, and last season it was a close call until the final race. It is my goal to reach that level, and I hope to achieve it soon. However, if not, we will see what unfolds.”
