The Orioles have made an announcement regarding infielder Diego Castillo. They revealed that he has not been claimed on waivers and has been sent outright to Triple-A Norfolk. Despite this, Castillo remains with the organization and it is expected that he will receive an invite to big league Spring Training as a non-roster player.
This resolution comes after what has likely been a turbulent few weeks for Castillo. He has been placed on waivers four times since being designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks just before Christmas. Castillo had brief stints with the Mets, Yankees, and Phillies before landing with the Orioles. However, Baltimore designated him for assignment when they acquired lefty reliever Matt Krook.
Fortunately for the Orioles, Castillo has gone unclaimed on waivers and will continue to be a part of the organization in a non-roster capacity. Many teams have shown interest in Castillo as a depth option, given his strong contact skills in the minors. Throughout three seasons in Triple-A, Castillo has maintained an impressive .296/.410/.407 batting line. Last year, he particularly excelled with Arizona’s top affiliate, boasting a .313/.431/.410 slash.
Unfortunately, Castillo’s success in the minors has not translated to the MLB level. During his rookie campaign with the Pirates, Castillo struggled, posting a .206/.251/.382 line in 96 games. He only made one appearance at the major league level for the Diamondbacks last year. As a result, Castillo is expected to begin the 2024 season in Norfolk, as the Orioles have a deep collection of infield talent on their 40-man roster.
