NEOM McLaren reserve driver Taylor Barnard will participate in the upcoming Berlin E-Prix double-header following surgery on Sam Bird’s hand. Bird, who won in Sao Paulo, sustained a fracture to his left hand during a crash in FP1 prior to last Saturday’s Monaco E-Prix. With only twenty minutes’ notice before FP2, Barnard stepped in as a substitute, becoming the youngest-ever FIA Formula E driver. Despite starting in 22nd place, he finished 14th in the race. McLaren has expressed satisfaction with Bird’s successful surgery and expects him to recover quickly and return to racing in the near future. McLaren’s Team Principal, Ian James, commended Barnard for his outstanding performance in Monaco and expressed confidence in his ability to build on that experience while Bird focuses on his recovery. The team eagerly anticipates Bird’s return to the car.
