Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas has shared that he is currently in discussions to secure his position on the Formula 1 grid beyond 2024. Bottas’ current contract with the Swiss team will come to an end at the conclusion of this season, but he has expressed his desire to extend his stay for the Audi takeover. When questioned about the progress of his talks with Sauber and other teams, Bottas revealed that he and his management team have initiated preliminary conversations. The outcome of the 2024 season will likely play a significant role in determining Bottas’ future, whether it be with his current team or potential opportunities elsewhere. “I’m gradually starting to make progress. However, there haven’t been any major developments yet,” Bottas admitted during the Japanese Grand Prix. “I believe we need more races under our belt this season, and hopefully, with positive results, things will start to gain momentum, although not significantly at this stage.” Nevertheless, the 34-year-old acknowledged the possibility of being left without a team, which has motivated him to work towards securing his future as soon as possible. “That’s why it’s important to stay ahead of the game. My management team is actively working behind the scenes,” he explained. “I focus on my driving, while they assess the market and explore different options if necessary.”
Bottas joined Sauber prior to the 2022 season, back when it was known as Alfa Romeo. However, the team’s performance has declined since their impressive start under the ground effect rules.
Nevertheless, the Finnish driver, who has won races ten times with Mercedes, sees Audi’s upcoming entry in 2026 as an opportunity to reclaim his position at the forefront of the sport’s grid.
“Being a part of Audi could potentially be a fantastic chance for me to do just that. Naturally, that piques my interest,” he expressed.
Delving deeper into his future plans, Bottas admitted that he longs for the sensation of competing at the front of the pack since his departure from Mercedes in 2021.
Currently in his twelfth season in Formula 1, Bottas remains determined to achieve more and prefers not to set a specific timeline for a potential retirement.
“I don’t want to assign a particular number to the remaining years of my career. I don’t see the end approaching yet,” he stated.
“I still believe I have much to offer and many goals to accomplish. Right now, my motivation is to get closer to the top. I miss the exhilaration of battling at the front.”
Bottas believes that his extensive experience in the series will be an appealing factor in his favor, along with his reputation as a cooperative team member.
“The more experience you have, the better you can adapt to various circumstances,” Bottas continued.
“I hope that becomes my strength. Additionally, it’s important for them to know that I work well with anyone as a team player.”
