United Autosports has announced that James Cottingham will be joining them for the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship in their McLaren 720S GT3 Evo car. Cottingham, who was the vice-champion in the 2023 British GT and is a Bronze driver, will be teaming up with Gregoire Saucy and another driver who will be announced later. The 40-year-old started GT racing in 2021 and had an impressive season with three race wins and two podium finishes, which led to his vice-champion title. Cottingham expressed his excitement about working with McLaren Automotive and United Autosports, both highly esteemed in the motorsport world. He mentioned that racing at Le Mans and competing in a World Championship has been a lifelong dream for him, and he is grateful for this opportunity after only two and a half years in modern motorsport. Cottingham feels prepared for this new challenge, thanks to his experience in various races such as British GT, Gulf 12 Hours, Spa 24 Hours, and Dubai 24 Hours. He is dedicated to the FIA World Endurance Championship and is particularly fond of driving the McLaren car. Richard Dean, the CEO of United Autosports, commented on Cottingham’s addition to their 2024 WEC lineup, stating that his achievements in British GT have caught their attention. He also expressed the team’s excitement for Cottingham’s WEC debut in the McLaren 720S GT3 Evo and their determination to make their first race in Qatar a success. United Autosports, based in Yorkshire, will be entering the new LMGT3 category with McLaren machinery, in addition to their already impressive involvement in LMP2 and LMP3 competition. They will represent the McLaren brand with two cars, the #59 and the #95. The FIA WEC season will begin in Qatar, with the pre-season Prologue test taking place on 24-25 February, followed by the 1812 km season-opener on 2 March.
