The Miami Grand Prix paddock has been abuzz with conversation since Newey, the sport’s highest-rated and multiple title-winning designer, made a shocking announcement that he would be departing from Red Bull next year after almost two decades of service.
Newey, whose cars have achieved 25 F1 drivers’ and constructors’ championships, may be Formula One’s most sought-after free agent, but Brown believes that there could be a mass departure of talent seeking to escape the chaos at Red Bull.
Brown informed reporters in Miami: “Given everything that has occurred since the beginning of the year, and knowing Adrian quite well, he is a person of high integrity. I am not surprised that he is moving on.
“I believe that the situation at Red Bull is causing some instability, which is likely the first domino to fall, and my prediction is that it will not be the last, considering the number of impressive resumes circulating,” disclosed the CEO of McLaren.
Brown’s remarks support reports that indicate Newey’s decision to leave is connected to allegations of misconduct by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner towards a female employee, who has appealed the outcome that cleared Horner of any wrongdoing.
Following an internal investigation by the team, Horner was found innocent of the allegations in February. He has also faced scrutiny regarding rumored conflicts with triple F1 world champion Max Verstappen’s father Jos and Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko.
“We have noticed an increase in the number of CVs we have received from the Red Bull team,” Brown stated. “Adrian is the most successful designer in history, so in addition to his technical expertise, people want to work for individuals like Adrian Newey and alongside him.
“I believe that the team will miss his contributions from a purely technical standpoint, as well as the leadership and enthusiasm that people experience when working with him,” Brown added. (Reporting by Steve Keating)
