If there is one thing that has defined Todd Boehly’s time at Chelsea, it is the seemingly random approach he has taken to the transfer windows. While there is clearly some business acumen behind it, the manner in which the Blues have acquired talent for exorbitant fees is reminiscent of a child in a candy store buying up everything in sight. The downside, of course, is that anything they don’t like is quickly discarded, as evidenced by the astonishing fire sale we witnessed at Stamford Bridge last summer. The number of players allowed to leave or forced out of the club was so high that a complete starting team could have been assembled. Mauricio Pochettino was left to pick up the pieces and, as expected, has struggled throughout the 2023/24 season. It remains uncertain whether Boehly will retain the Argentinian for the next season, considering Chelsea’s low league position and subpar performances. However, whoever is in charge will surely not want to hear that another massive player purge is planned. “Chelsea will have to offload players early in the transfer window – before the books are balanced on June 30th,” former Everton executive Keith Wyness stated on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast. “Their actions will have a significant impact and could set off a chain reaction if they fail to achieve their goals. They can then spend again later in the window. This just goes to show that these rules and limitations are being implemented incorrectly. Common sense must come into play here. Chelsea will target specific players, such as Gallagher, to maximize their value since he came through the club’s academy.” Wyness appears to be well-informed, as he now serves as a football consultant advising top-tier clubs. One would hope that Boehly has learned his lesson by now…
