Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick Schumacher, who was previously crowned the Formula 2 champion in 2020, is facing challenges in his attempt to return to Formula 1 following a disappointing period with Haas. After his stint with Haas in 2022, the 24-year-old driver was forced out of the sport and spent a year on the sidelines. Now, it appears that Schumacher’s return to the racing grid may not happen anytime soon.
Despite not being listed for any Formula 1 team in 2025, including his current employers Mercedes and Alpine, Mick Schumacher has taken on a reserve role at Mercedes and has also joined Alpine’s Hypercar program in the World Endurance Championship for 2024. However, Schumacher has expressed his desire to make a comeback to Formula 1, potentially even replacing Lewis Hamilton at Brackley.
Reports indicate that Mick Schumacher will be working in the simulator for Mercedes, with a specific focus on his Formula 1 responsibilities over Alpine’s WEC program. Schumacher has made it clear that his ultimate goal is to re-enter Formula 1 as a full-time driver, but at the moment, it seems that he may not have any viable options.
Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff, has praised Schumacher on multiple occasions and reportedly attempted to secure a seat for him at Williams for 2024. However, Williams decided to stick with their current driver, Logan Sargeant, who is part of their driver academy.
With Lewis Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari, Mercedes is now in need of a driver for 2025. While Schumacher may not be a contender for this seat, there is a possibility that Wolff could find a place for him at Williams if the team signs Alex Albon for the upcoming season.
It remains to be seen if Mick Schumacher will find a seat in Formula 1 for 2025. Currently, the German driver is fully focused on his Hypercar campaign with Alpine. However, he is open to the opportunity of a Formula 1 comeback if it arises in the near future.
