In a major revelation for the FIA Formula E series, ABT Cupra has been confirmed as the inaugural powertrain customer for the collaborative manufacturer project between Lola and Yamaha. Speculation about this deal has been rampant since Lola’s announcement of its entry as an FE manufacturer during the Tokyo E-Prix weekend. Cupra was in a hurry to find a new supplier after deciding to terminate their contract with Mahindra at the end of the season. They were determined to secure a new powertrain in time for the start of the GEN3 Evo era. Formula E has stated that preparations are already underway behind the scenes, including a planned launch, testing, and an ambitious on-track shakedown scheduled for June.
Thomas Biermaier, Team Principal of Cupra, expressed his delight at finding two reputable partners for their future in Formula E. He acknowledged the challenges that a new manufacturer faces when entering and establishing itself in a world championship. However, he also highlighted the skills, motivation, and determination demonstrated by Lola and Yamaha throughout their discussions and negotiations.
