Dale Earnhardt Jr. emphasized the rapid depletion of tires during the NASCAR race at Bristol. The race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday was filled with tire wear, which became the main focus. The combination of the Goodyear tire compound and the resin applied on the track before the race resulted in significant tire wear. Instead of adhering to the track, the rubber was forming marbles, leading to an accelerated wear process.
At the start of the race, NASCAR quickly realized that they did not have enough tires for all the teams to pit as frequently as they desired. The supply of tires from Goodyear was insufficient, causing teams to continuously bring tires to the garage. Consequently, NASCAR made the decision to be more lenient in calling cautions, as most drivers would pit if the yellow flag was waved.
This move by NASCAR did not impress the NASCAR Hall of Famer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., as he believed it put drivers at risk. However, he also acknowledged the difficult situation NASCAR was in. If a more conservative approach was taken and cautions were called every time, they would have run out of tires, leading to chaos on the pit road.
Dale Jr., speaking about the drama, expressed how frustrating it is for teams to deal with such uncertainty and decisions from NASCAR during the race. As a team owner and former driver, he understands the frustrations involved.
Despite the frustrating aspects, Dale Jr. also highlighted some positive aspects. The excessive tire wear, although extreme, is a step in the right direction for fixing the short track racing issues of the Next-Gen cars in NASCAR. He believes that NASCAR can find a solution to address these issues based on the experience at Bristol.
