Virginia has a rich history in stock car racing and is home to iconic tracks like the Richmond Raceway. However, another track, which has been around for over 50 years, is currently facing difficulties. The Southside Speedway is on the brink of closure and in desperate need of significant investment to avoid becoming a thing of the past. In 2021, the track completely shut down operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, recent efforts have been made to revive the track, with its future now resting in the hands of the state and Chesterfield County.
Denny Hamlin, one of the most accomplished and well-known NASCAR drivers in history, began his career at this very facility. Following his victory at the Richmond Raceway, Hamlin was asked about his potential involvement in the track’s redevelopment project. In response, Hamlin expressed his willingness to operate the track if the project moves forward.

Hamlin also addressed the possibility of investing his own money into the track. He acknowledged that it would be a significant financial commitment unless a multifunctional facility is constructed. Hamlin emphasized the importance of hosting kart races, other racing series, and concerts to ensure the track’s sustainability.
Hamlin’s cautious approach to investing is understandable given the uncertainty surrounding the redevelopment plan. However, it could be the best way for him to give back to the community and potentially help the city discover its next racing superstar, as no prominent racer has emerged following in Hamlin’s footsteps.
