Outfielder Drew Gilbert’s performance during his 35 games at Double-A Binghamton last summer, following his arrival in a trade with the Astros, confirmed to Mets officials that they had obtained a player without any glaring weaknesses.
“He displays excellent defensive skills, possesses strong baserunning abilities, shows signs of developing power, consistently makes contact, and demonstrates control at the plate,” stated Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. “When you consider all of these factors, it becomes evident that his potential is quite high.”
At the age of 23, Gilbert achieved an impressive batting average of .325, an on-base percentage of .423, and a slugging percentage of .561, along with six home runs in 154 plate appearances for Binghamton. The Mets acquired him alongside promising outfield prospect Ryan Clifford in a trade on August 1, where they sent Justin Verlander and a minimum of $35 million to Houston.
