The United States Women’s National Team is currently undergoing a period of transition. Since appointing Emma Hayes as the new head coach, the team is aiming to rise above the setbacks they faced during the 2023 World Cup. While fans eagerly await Hayes’ takeover, Ali Krieger has cautioned USWNT players that anything less than excellence will not be tolerated under Hayes’ leadership.
During an episode of “Kicking It” on Attacking Third, Krieger, alongside Kate Abdo, Clint Dempsey, Mo Edu, and Charlie Davies, shared her thoughts on Emma Hayes’ arrival. While expressing her belief that Hayes will do an outstanding job, Krieger stated, “I don’t believe she [Hayes] will tolerate any nonsense from the players. She will make it clear that they must prove themselves every day, and if they fail to do so, she will simply choose someone else who can.” Krieger believes that Hayes will demand a high level of performance from her team, leaving no room for errors.
“I think any sense of entitlement will disappear, and players will have to work hard and demonstrate their abilities,” Krieger added. It is evident that Krieger has immense faith in Hayes as the future head coach of the USWNT and recognizes her potential to lead the team to success. As the recipient of the Best FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year award in 2021, Hayes will be looking to replicate her achievements in England.

Krieger also believes that Hayes’ strong leadership qualities are exactly what the USWNT needs to reach new heights. After retiring from the national team, Krieger found it challenging to witness the team lacking a clear identity and specific style. However, she acknowledges that Emma Hayes possesses the necessary leadership and organizational skills. “She knows her identity and what is expected of her,” Krieger stated.
Furthermore, Krieger emphasized that Hayes is self-aware of her roles, responsibilities, and the style of play she will implement for the four-time World Champions. Considering Hayes’ dedication and success during her 11 seasons with Chelsea, it is evident that better days are on the horizon for the USWNT.
