It has been nearly three years since Josep Maria Bartomeu was removed from his position as president at FC Barcelona, but the incredibly poor decisions made during his time still haunt the Catalan giants.
Joan Laporta remains at the helm of a ship that is not quite sinking, but is still struggling to navigate through extremely difficult circumstances.
One of the club’s main problems revolves around Financial Fair Play, as they are unable to compete with their rivals in the transfer market.
While Real Madrid can seemingly sign players like Kylian Mbappe and Alphonso Davies, Barcelona still find themselves having to prioritize player sales in order to make new acquisitions.
“I don’t have any information about the situation concerning Frenkie de Jong so far. In general, Barcelona will understand the implications of Financial Fair Play in May and determine what they need to do in terms of player departures,” said Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive Daily Briefing.
“Deco made it clear two days ago that Barcelona does not want to sell their top players. However, Financial Fair Play could impact their transfer activity, and this will be clarified in the summer, not now.”
With the team far behind in the race for the Spanish top-flight title and performing poorly in the Champions League, it seems likely that Barcelona will end the season without any trophies under Xavi’s leadership.
While there are mitigating circumstances, this would still be a strong criticism of the former midfielder’s tenure.
This adds more pressure on Deco, who already has a full plate, as he is expected to make the right decisions this summer.
Barcelona cannot afford to spend another season in obscurity.
