Ahead of the 2024 season-opening race in Formula 1, new measures have been taken to address the issue of drain covers breaking at the Bahrain circuit. During last week’s pre-season test, the session was halted twice due to a loose drain cover near Turn 11. These drain covers, which are long, narrow, and slotted, run alongside the kerbs on the outer edge of the back straight before a medium-speed left turn. After the first incident, the drains were repaired, but the problem recurred on the final day of testing, prompting a reinforcement of the entire structure, which remained intact until the end of the test. With four days until the next track activity, improvements have been made to prevent a similar occurrence.
To address the main problem area near Turn 11, the loose drain has been removed and replaced with concrete, which has been painted to match the color of the kerbs. Additionally, extensive welding has been carried out on both sides of the drain covers in other parts of the track. The aim is to strengthen the drain covers and prevent any further issues.
The cause of the repeated problem during testing is still being investigated. One theory suggests that drivers are now utilizing the run-off area near the drain more frequently. This could be attributed to the improved mechanical setup and aerodynamic performance of this year’s cars, allowing drivers to push the limits without compromising the stability of the car upon entry to Turn 11. Whether similar measures will be required at other circuits on the calendar remains uncertain.
It is worth noting that during last year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, controversy arose when Carlos Sainz collided with a loose road surface cover, causing significant damage to his Ferrari.
