Canadian mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete Ashley Nichols has tragically passed away. The 37-year-old, who previously competed for the LFA (Legacy Fighting Alliance) title and in Invicta, was confirmed to have died by her former coach, Jeff Harrison, and other loved ones on social media on Wednesday. The cause of her death has not been publicly disclosed.
Harrison, who served as Nichols’ mentor and coach at the start of her journey, expressed his admiration for her courage, determination, and resilience in an Instagram post. He highlighted how she was a testament to the idea that hard work and determination could lead to success, regardless of one’s background. Nichols had a strong desire to be the best, despite battling personal demons.
As a proud member of the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Nichols excelled not only in MMA but also in kickboxing and muay thai. Alongside her 7-4 professional MMA record, she competed in three LFA fights and two Invicta matches. After suffering a defeat in her LFA title challenge against Jaqueline Amorim in 2022, Nichols bounced back with three consecutive victories in 2023.
Tragically, Nichols’ untimely death occurred just weeks before her scheduled return to the ring. She was set to compete at PAWFC 3 in Calgary, Alberta, on March 9.
Harrison was not the only one to pay tribute to Nichols. Social media platforms were flooded with emotional messages and posts honoring her memory. The outpouring of support and remembrance from the MMA community demonstrates the impact she had on those around her.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Ashley Nichols, a former Invicta fighter. May she rest in peace. [Link to Invicta FC’s tweet]
