Lewis Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari has created an opening at Mercedes for the 2025 season. Guenther Steiner, the former Haas team principal, has suggested his ideal choice for this position.
Lewis Hamilton finalized his unexpected transfer to Ferrari in 2025 prior to the start of the 2024 season. As a result, Mercedes currently has a vacant spot for a driver to fill the shoes of the seven-time world champion. Team principal Toto Wolff is actively considering his options to select a driver to partner with George Russell.
Toto Wolff had previously stated that George Russell would be the lead driver following Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025. Furthermore, the majority of the driver market will be available by 2025, allowing Wolff to take his time in making a decision. It is worth noting that the reigning world champion is also being considered as a potential candidate to drive for the team from 2025.
In light of these developments, Guenther Steiner, the former Haas team principal, has also expressed his thoughts on the replacement driver. Steiner hinted at his former team’s driver and emphasized how he deserved the opportunity to race in Brackley. He also mentioned how the German driver was in the wrong place at the wrong time, suggesting that a seat at Mercedes could be the right place and time for Hulkenberg.
Toto Wolff had previously stated that he would not rush into making a decision for the second driver. Therefore, the team principal is exploring his options before making a final choice. There were previous rumors about a potential candidate, but Wolff emphasized the team’s commitment to a long-term driver. He also stated that he was open to acquiring talent within Brackley.
Additionally, Toto Wolff hinted at the strong bond between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. He mentioned his intention to end the season on a high note to provide a fitting farewell for the driver. The team will also give their utmost effort to potentially contend for a championship.
The start of the 2024 season has not been ideal for Brackley. The W15 challenger has been delivering mediocre pace and performance for the drivers. Therefore, the team needs to work diligently to improve their form and ensure a successful conclusion to 2024 for Lewis Hamilton.
