Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently announced that the team will make a bold decision when selecting a driver to replace Lewis Hamilton in 2025, when the seven-time F1 Champion moves to Ferrari. While many speculated that this statement hinted at Formula 2 rookie and Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli joining George Russell at Mercedes from 2025 onwards, there have been other rumors circulating. Some suggest that Fernando Alonso may make a move to Mercedes, while others even suggest that Sebastian Vettel could come out of retirement to replace his former rival. However, recent events at Red Bull Racing have fueled further speculation. The controversy surrounding Red Bull boss Christian Horner and the growing divide with Max Verstappen’s camp, particularly highlighted by a statement from Verstappen’s father Jos, has led to beliefs that Verstappen may switch to Mercedes in 2025. Hamilton, when presented with these facts before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, did not rule out any driver moves within F1, using his own move to Ferrari in 2025 as evidence. Speaking to the media, Hamilton acknowledged that Verstappen is likely being considered as a potential driver for Mercedes, stating that he is not surprised and that Verstappen is a great driver. Hamilton also commented on the incident at the 2021 Abu Dhabi F1 season finale, stating that Verstappen did what he had to do and that it was not his fault. Hamilton understands the desire for teams to have the best driver who attracts attention and sponsorship, and believes Verstappen fits that criteria. However, he also expressed that it may not make sense for Verstappen to make the move. Hamilton also mentioned that Russell is an integral part of the Mercedes team and will become a leader in the future. He believes that a pairing of Russell and Verstappen would be a strong lineup. Russell, on the other hand, stated that he doesn’t mind who joins him at Mercedes and welcomes the challenge, including Verstappen. Verstappen, however, stated that it would take something “really crazy” for him to leave Red Bull.
