Ilia Topuria has a confident prediction for his inaugural UFC title bout. The unbeaten featherweight contender envisions not only dethroning champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298, but also securing a victory in the first round. Volkanovski, who has never been defeated at 145 pounds during his ten-year tenure as a professional MMA fighter, is facing a formidable challenge in Topuria (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) on Feb. 17.
“I foresee myself concluding the fight in the first round – through a knockout,” expressed Topuria to UFC Español. “Unless he attempts to take me down, it is highly likely that I will render him unconscious. I will extinguish his lights.”
Topuria believes that Volkanovski’s time as the reigning champion has come to an end, particularly given his age of 35. He perceives himself as an upgraded version of Volkanovski, representing the new generation of MMA.
“I am a part of the modern era of MMA,” stated Topuria. “I bring an evolved approach in all aspects of the sport, including striking, wrestling, and grappling. I consider myself to be a much more well-rounded and efficient finisher compared to Volkanovski.”
While Volkanovski possesses the advantage of experience, Topuria believes that his youthfulness is on his side, asserting that this is his moment to shine. He credits divine timing for his preparation, leaving no room for failure.
The championship fight is less than two weeks away for Topuria. He expresses contentment with the progress made during his training camp, which he considers to be the most professional one he has ever experienced. Thorough analysis of his opponent has been conducted, ensuring his readiness for the upcoming battle.
