Christian Lundgaard expressed his thoughts on the anticipated arrival of the IndyCar’s upcoming hybrid powertrain system, which is currently slated to be introduced sometime after the Indianapolis 500. Lundgaard, who is currently racing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, belongs to one of the teams that have not had the opportunity to test the hybrid system on the track. While the larger teams in the series have had multiple days to develop and test the components, drivers who have not yet experienced the new format are uncertain about its potential impact. Lundgaard, speaking ahead of the opening round of the 2024 season, expressed doubt about the mid-season introduction of the hybrid system. He believes that teams that have already been running with the current setup have an advantage in terms of understanding the car’s balance and performance, which could lead to an unfair playing field. Lundgaard also highlighted the disparity in testing opportunities, using Callum Ilott as an example, who has had more mileage in the car during the offseason due to hybrid testing. Lundgaard feels that the situation seems disorganized, suggesting that the expectation is that the hybrid system may not be ready.
