JJ Redick and Patrick Beverley are engaged in a heated online feud regarding their opinions on coach Doc Rivers. The dispute originated from remarks made on the morning talk show First Take.
During the show, Redick strongly criticized his former coach with the LA Clippers, accusing him of consistently shifting blame onto others for his own failures. Beverley, on the other hand, disagreed with Redick’s perspective.
Redick stated, “I have observed this pattern for years. It’s always about making excuses. Doc, we understand that taking over a team mid-season is challenging, just like being traded mid-season is difficult for a player. But it’s always an excuse, always throwing your team under the bus… There’s never any accountability with that man.”
These comments quickly went viral due to Redick’s firsthand experience playing under Rivers for four seasons. The timing of the criticism is particularly noteworthy, as Rivers has recently struggled with a 3-7 start as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. He was hired by the franchise after the midseason dismissal of Adrian Griffin, who had achieved a 30-13 record with the same roster.
One of Rivers’ current players came to his defense on social media, asserting, “Doc actually saved your career. He gave you a chance when nobody else wanted to.” This response from Beverley was prompted by the viral nature of Redick’s comments. Redick, however, fired back with a series of retorts.
In a repost, Redick sarcastically wrote, “Pat, my friend, I had a four-year offer with a player option for the same salary to be a starter for a different team. So much for ‘saving my career.'”
It is not surprising that Beverley ended up in Milwaukee shortly after Rivers’ arrival, considering their previous working relationship. Therefore, Beverley’s defense of the Bucks’ coach following the on-air criticism was expected.
While Beverley may disagree with Redick’s viewpoint, it is evident that the Bucks need to make improvements to regain stability following the coaching change.
