Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, has previously discussed the potential transfer of Kylian Mbappe to the Merseyside club.
The captain of France is nearing the end of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and recent reports indicate that the French star has informed his current club of his intention to depart at the conclusion of the season.
While Real Madrid has often been mentioned as Mbappe’s likely destination, Liverpool has also emerged as a potential suitor for the 25-year-old.
According to The Athletic, Mbappe has conveyed his desire to leave PSG at the end of the season. The same source reveals that Real Madrid has already presented the player with a contract, enabling him to engage in pre-contract negotiations with clubs outside of France.
Liverpool’s interest in Mbappe predates his departure from Monaco. Jurgen Klopp admitted in the summer that he would be surprised if the team were able to secure a deal for Mbappe.
“We joke about it,” Klopp told Sky Germany in August. “I can say that I believe he is an excellent player, but the financial circumstances are not favorable for us. I don’t want to spoil the story now… but as far as I know, there is nothing to it.
“It is possible that someone else at the club is making preparations and wants to surprise me… but that has not happened in the eight years I have been here. It would be a first.”
A move to Liverpool seems highly unlikely, as reports indicate that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has taken charge of bringing Mbappe to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid has long held an interest in the player, and Mbappe himself is eager to wear the iconic white shirt of the Spanish club.
