Vincent Kompany believes that Jurgen Klopp’s caution during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Burnley resulted in him also receiving a yellow card. The referee, Tim Robinson, cautioned Klopp at Anfield after the Reds were not awarded a penalty for a foul on Diogo Jota. Kompany, too, was cautioned by the official, marking his third yellow card of the season and leading to his absence in Burnley’s upcoming clash against Arsenal.
After his team’s 17th defeat in the Premier League this season, Kompany suggested that Klopp’s caution influenced Robinson to also caution him, possibly as a means of “evening things out.” In his post-match reaction, Kompany frustratingly stated, “I believe I was booked because I should have taken note of the fact that Jurgen Klopp was booked, and then all I think the referee did was seek me out.”
“Now I am suspended for the next game [against Arsenal],” he added.
Klopp himself questioned the rationale behind his counterpart receiving a yellow card and even jokingly referred to recent reports proposing the introduction of a blue card, which could result in a sin-bin.
“Imagine in this game if the referee had a blue card available?,” he remarked.
“I had no idea why Vincent Kompany received it. I lost control in that situation, so go ahead, give me a yellow card.”
What will be even more frustrating for Burnley is that they are now tied on points with the bottom-placed Sheffield United after their impressive 3-1 victory away at Luton Town on Saturday afternoon.
