Carlos Sainz Jr, the winner of the race, is seen celebrating alongside his teammate Charles Leclerc in the parc ferme. This occurred during the Formula 1 World Championship, specifically at the Australian Grand Prix in Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia on March 24, 2024.
Leclerc and Norris have both dismissed the idea that Sainz is underestimated, pointing out that those within the Formula 1 community recognize his value. While Leclerc has had a slight advantage over Sainz since they became teammates at Ferrari in 2021, Sainz has managed to secure the last two race victories for the Italian team.
One of these victories took place recently in Australia, where Sainz led a memorable Ferrari 1-2 finish. It is worth noting that Sainz had just recovered from an appendix operation two weeks prior to this race. Additionally, Sainz also achieved the only non-Red Bull win of the previous season in Singapore. Despite these successes, Ferrari has chosen not to renew his contract and has instead signed Lewis Hamilton for 2025.
Nevertheless, Leclerc is confident that Sainz will have no trouble finding a seat on the grid, as other teams recognize his skills as a racing driver. When asked if he believed Sainz was underrated, Leclerc responded by saying that everyone in the paddock knows Sainz’s worth. He considers Sainz to be one of the most highly regarded drivers in Formula 1, as he consistently demonstrates his strength on the track. Leclerc believes that many team principals are likely in talks with Sainz, even though he may not openly discuss it. Leclerc is confident that Sainz will have numerous opportunities and will ultimately make the best decision for his career.
Norris, who partnered Sainz at McLaren in his first two seasons in Formula 1, agreed with Leclerc’s remarks, asserting that the Ferrari superstar has made further progress in 2024.
“I believe Charles expressed it accurately,” Lando added. “There is no reason for anyone to consider him underrated. Those who are familiar with him understand his capabilities, his level of effort, his approach, and his dedication to becoming one of the best. He has proven this today and over the past few weeks.
“I’m certain that there are many drivers who wouldn’t have exerted as much effort or dedicated as much time to recovering and returning to the race car. This is just one example. But for those who know what he is capable of, they would never say he is underrated.
“Of course, results are often used as a measure. People on the outside tend to judge based on what they see on TV. However, when you have worked with him and understand his capabilities, you witness exceptional performances like the one he delivered this weekend. And I would say he has consistently performed at this level throughout the year. He has shown improvement compared to last year. So, if you underestimate him, you are foolish.”
Sainz commented, “I suppose I must agree with my two favorite teammates,” and further emphasized that those who have worked with him recognize his talent and dedication.
“While there are kind words being said, I concur with them,” he stated. “People who know me, have been on the same team as me, or have worked with me truly understand who I am. As for those who may lack insight or knowledge about this sport and wish to undervalue me, I am indifferent to their opinions. Honestly, I don’t care.
“But I do care about the people who possess a deep understanding of this sport, my teammates, those who have access to my data, witness my work ethic, and observe my speed. Their opinions matter to me, and I do not feel underrated by them.”
