At 39 years old, Lewis Hamilton recently announced that he will be departing from Mercedes at the end of the season after signing a long-term contract elsewhere. Team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the significant challenge that Mercedes faces in reclaiming their dominant position. He recognized the difficulty of catching up to a team like Red Bull, who held a substantial lead in the previous season. The W15 car features a silver nose, commemorating the 90th anniversary of Mercedes’ renowned ‘Silver Arrows’ legacy, along with the familiar red, green, and black colors that have become synonymous with the team in recent years.
George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate, expressed his eagerness to test the car’s performance firsthand. He acknowledged the team’s growth and development over the past two seasons, acknowledging that it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Technical director James Allison highlighted the team’s efforts to address the weaknesses identified in the previous year’s car. Their primary focus was on improving the rear axle, which was described as unpredictable and “spiteful,” in order to provide drivers with a more reassuring experience. Allison explained the desired characteristics of the car’s handling, emphasizing the need for stability during braking and turning, while also allowing for nimble and responsive performance as the car approaches the apex of a corner. He expressed confidence in the team’s work, although the true results will only be evident once the car hits the track.
