LIV Golf does not receive Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) points because of their unique format, which results in many golfers dropping in rankings and missing out on major championships.
Following the conclusion of the Genesis Invitational, the OWGR was updated, and golfers who participated in the event received points that improved their overall rankings. However, LIV Golfers did not receive these points, leading the CEO, Greg Norman, to once again criticize the ranking system.
Norman has been advocating for LIV Golf to receive ranking points, but their application was turned down by the OWGR committee in 2023 due to their 54-hole format. In response, Norman took to social media to express his frustration.
In the latest OWGR update, only a few LIV Golfers, including Rahm, Hatton, and Meronk, are ranked in the top 50. However, it should be noted that three of them have recently joined the breakaway tour.
Norman compared the OWGR rankings to those of other organizations such as TUGR, SI, and Data Golf, and criticized the current ranking system as “laughable.”
Compared to other rankings, LIV Golf would have at least eight players in the top 50. However, the OWGR is the most important ranking system as it determines eligibility for major championships.
Recently, some players, including a former Masters champion, faced ranking troubles due to their association with LIV Golf. This resulted in their rankings dropping significantly, and they criticized the rankings as being biased.
As the OWGR committee has firmly denied LIV Golfers’ application for ranking points, they will be without these points for the foreseeable future. However, some players will have the opportunity to improve their rankings in the coming months, particularly those who will be participating in the Masters and other major championships.
While LIV Golfers will not be appearing in any of the four majors, there are still notable players from the tour who will be competing. The Masters, the first major of the year, will feature past winners like Reed, Johnson, and Rahm, along with other major champions.
The next event for LIV Golf will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and it will be the third event of the year. The previous two events, LIV Golf Vegas and LIV Golf Mayakoba, saw Johnson and emerge as the winners respectively.
