Once again, Major League Baseball demonstrated a complete lack of judgment on Sunday with an ill-advised tribute post about Barry Bonds on X.
For some unknown reason, MLB decided to honor the most divisive player ever during Black History Month, despite having countless other players to choose from.
Bonds, who holds the all-time record for home runs with 762, as well as the records for most home runs in a single season and most career walks, went 11 years without being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is now permanently ineligible unless former players select him in the future.
Despite all of this, MLB still felt compelled to write a glowing statement about Bonds on X.
“Barry Bonds had an exceptional offensive career, smashing a record-breaking 762 home runs and achieving a 1.051 OPS over 22 seasons.
“Bonds earned an unprecedented 7 NL MVPs, along with 12 Silver Sluggers and 8 Gold Glove Awards. He was a 14-time All-Star, leading the league in on-base percentage 10 times and slugging percentage 7 times.
“His family has deep roots in baseball, with his father being the 3-time All-Star Bobby Bonds, his cousin the Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, and his godfather the Hall of Famer Willie Mays. #BlackHistoryMonth.”

None of the information provided is false. However, MLB conveniently omitted the controversial BALCO steroid scandal and Bonds’ exclusion from the Hall of Fame.
“Put him in the Hall of Fame? Nah,” commented one MLB fan, echoing the sentiments of many others. “But let’s write a lengthy Twitter post during Black History Month! Yeah!”
“So, are you counting his stats now or what?” questioned another fan.
“If only there was a museum or at least a room to commemorate his achievements… or even a hall,” sarcastically replied someone else.
I’m not well-versed in sports, but if they’re celebrating him like this, I’ll assume he’s in the Hall of Fame. https://t.co/gbyHxJWmuD

Seriously… what did Major League Baseball expect would happen when they made that post?
