Fernando Alonso of the Aston Martin F1 Team was seen on the drivers’ parade during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Italy on May 19, 2024. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko recently revealed that discussions were held with Alonso regarding a potential drive in 2025, prior to his contract renewal with Aston Martin. Last month, Aston Martin announced that Alonso had signed a new contract extension to remain with the team until the 2026 rules reset. Although Alonso acknowledged having talks with other teams, he did not disclose which ones. There were rumors suggesting he was interested in joining Red Bull. Marko confirmed that conversations did take place with Alonso, but it was ultimately decided that signing him would potentially disrupt Max Verstappen’s harmonious work environment. Marko emphasized that having two multiple-time champions in the same team, alongside the incumbent Sergio Perez, would not be conducive to success. He noted the age difference and contrasting personalities of Alonso and Verstappen, making it challenging for a team to manage effectively. Despite not having won a race since 2013 and turning 43 in July, Alonso continues to impress Marko with his performance and dedication at the highest level. Marko also mentioned that Red Bull had previously approached Alonso in the early years of the team, but he declined as he did not believe they were capable of building championship-winning cars.
