The Marlins and Twins have reached an agreement that will see infielder/outfielder Nick Gordon join Miami, according to a report by Robert Murray of FanSided. In exchange, left-hander Steven Okert will be heading to Minnesota, as reported by Craig Mish of the Miami Herald.
Gordon, who was selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft, was considered a top prospect during his time in the Twins’ minor league system. However, his performance began to decline as he struggled in the higher levels of the minors. Despite this, Gordon made his MLB debut in 2021, appearing in 73 games for the Twins. He then played a larger role in 2022, with 443 plate appearances over 136 games. During the 2022 season, Gordon impressed with a batting average of .272, an on-base percentage of .316, and a slugging percentage of .427. His ability to play multiple positions made him a valuable asset for the injury-plagued Minnesota team.
Unfortunately, Gordon himself fell victim to the injury bug last year. He fractured his right shin after fouling a ball off himself on May 17, which prematurely ended his MLB season after just 34 games. Gordon did make a brief return to Triple-A in September, playing six games, but he was not ready to rejoin the active roster before the end of the regular season. Prior to his injury, Gordon had been struggling at the plate, with a batting average of only .176, an on-base percentage of .185, and a slugging percentage of .319 in 93 plate appearances.
