McLaren has announced its intentions to implement its first significant upgrade for the 2024 Formula 1 season. This upgrade aims to address a persistent weakness that may not be fully resolved until 2025. The team has struggled with slow corners in recent years, even before the introduction of the current ground effect regulations in 2022. This issue is particularly evident in longer corners, as demonstrated in the last race in Jeddah where the McLaren set the fastest first-sector time. These high-speed turns highlighted the limitations of the car in longer corners, where it loses significant time compared to competitors like Ferrari. Additionally, McLaren is looking to improve its top speed. The team plans to introduce an upgrade package around race six or seven, which will primarily focus on addressing the weakness in long, low-speed corners. A new front wing will be a crucial component of this upgrade, as the current design is not significantly different from the one used in 2023. The changes to the front wing and associated areas will be sensitive to factors such as ride-height and aerodynamic impact, aiming to enhance the car’s performance across a wider range of yaw angles. McLaren is aware of the root cause of its struggles and is working on delivering projects that address these issues. While improvements are expected, it will take at least another year to completely eliminate the weakness and create a well-rounded car. McLaren recognizes the importance of resolving these balance issues before the new rules set in 2026, as the team aims to become a world championship contender. In the short term, McLaren plans to make minor tweaks in Australia and Japan, but these adjustments are expected to have minimal impact on performance.
