2024 has started off better for the Woking-based team compared to last year, but they haven’t quite reached the same level of success as they did in the latter part of the previous year when they were competing for podium finishes and even won a Sprint race with Piastri.
However, McLaren achieved their best collective Qualifying performance of the year so far at the Australian Grand Prix. Norris will start in fourth position while Piastri will start in sixth for the 58-lap race.
Throughout the weekend, Norris has consistently shown better speed, topping the timings in the first practice session and surpassing Charles Leclerc from Ferrari to secure a place on the second row in the final qualifying session.
When asked about McLaren’s progress this season, Norris commented, “We have made improvements in a few areas. Every weekend, we try to make small adjustments to the car to enhance its performance. I think we have done the best we can, while others might not have maximized their potential.”
“It’s evident from today’s performance that we have been slightly ahead of our main competitors. Perhaps some didn’t achieve their desired results, but we did. Additionally, we have a strong car this weekend, better than the previous weekend,” added Norris.
Similar to the MCL60 in 2023, McLaren’s MCL38 seems to excel on circuits with numerous high-speed corners. Norris believes this is one of the reasons why they were able to compete with Ferrari and Red Bull in qualifying.
He further explained, “The layout of this circuit is slightly different, which may have worked in our favor more than others. There are several high-speed corners that benefit our car on this track.”
Norris was also questioned about his teammate Piastri’s strong start to 2024, marking his second year in Formula 1. Norris expressed that Piastri’s immediate speed is evident and that he seems to be continuously improving with each session, highlighting his growth compared to his rookie season.
Piastri, who is participating in his home race for the second time, resides in Melbourne, a mere 15-minute drive away from the Albert Park Circuit. Understandably, the Australian driver is thrilled for the Australian Grand Prix. He mentioned feeling relaxed and noted that more people recognize him this time around, which he finds cool. Overall, Piastri believes it has been a positive week so far.
Starting on the third row for the race, the 22-year-old shared his expectations, acknowledging the challenge ahead. While their race runs looked promising, Piastri acknowledged the strength of the cars around them, particularly those in front. To surpass Red Bull or Ferrari, they will need to find something extra or rely on some good fortune. However, Piastri stated that if they can maintain their starting position and not lose ground, it would be a satisfactory outcome for them.
The Australian Grand Prix will commence on Sunday, March 24th, at 04:00 GMT (15:00 local time). How will McLaren’s “improvements” perform on the streets of Melbourne during the race?
