In a surprising turn of events on Monday, the Cubs made the decision to part ways with former manager David Ross and appoint Craig Counsell as his replacement. Counsell, who had been associated with the Brewers since 2015, was chosen to lead the team, much to the dismay of an individual in the Milwaukee area. This disgruntled person defaced a sign at a local Little League park that had been dedicated to Counsell.
Counsell has deep connections with the Milwaukee Brewers. His father worked for the team while raising his family in the lakeside suburb of Whitefish Bay. In 2004, Counsell made his debut with the Brewers and spent a season with them before moving to Arizona.
A few years later, he signed a contract with his hometown club and remained there until his retirement from MLB in 2011. Following his playing career, the two-time World Series champion joined the Brewers’ front office. In 2015, he was appointed as the manager, replacing Ron Roenicke. Despite a slow start, Counsell led Milwaukee to the NLCS in 2018, marking their first postseason appearance in years. Under his leadership, the team consistently performed well, only missing the playoffs once.
During his tenure in Milwaukee, Counsell accumulated a record of 707-625. Given his success, it is understandable why he seized the opportunity to manage the Chicago Cubs.
However, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, an individual, likely a disgruntled Brewers fan, expressed their disapproval by defacing the sign bearing Counsell’s name at the Little League baseball complex in Whitefish Bay. The sign, which was dedicated to him in 2012, was vandalized with graffiti (using a three-letter synonym for “butt”) following the news of his departure.
In response, a member of the Whitefish Bay Little League board promptly covered the defaced Craig Counsell Park sign with a tarp.

The act of vandalizing a Little League field due to dissatisfaction with the person it is named after demonstrates a particular level of pettiness among sports fans. This incident serves as a reminder that one should never underestimate the pettiness that can arise within the sports community.
