The future of the Arizona Diamondbacks remains uncertain, according to owner Ken Kendrick. The team has yet to finalize a television or home venue deal, which could potentially result in a relocation from Phoenix.
Kendrick discussed the current situation as the D’backs head into Spring Training. Following their appearance in the 2023 World Series, spirits are high within the team. Arizona secured a wildcard spot after finishing the regular season with a record of 84-78. They then went on to defeat the Brewers, Dodgers, and Phillies in consecutive order, winning their first National League championship since 2001.
Throughout this successful run, the city of Phoenix showed tremendous support. Fans consistently filled the seats at Chase Field, cheering on the home team to victory.
However, Kendrick believes that the city can do more. He expressed disappointment with the current state of affairs and emphasized the availability of opportunities elsewhere. Kendrick stated, “There are other cities that are eager to have a major league baseball team. We are not currently in discussions with those communities, but we are aware of their interest. It is possible that our sport will expand to a few additional cities in the future.”
The lease agreement between Arizona and Chase Field expires in 2027, and despite ongoing talks since last Spring Training, little progress has been made. It is unclear whether Kendrick’s comments are simply a tactic to apply pressure or if there is a genuine possibility of the team relocating.
