Carlos Sainz Jr, who secured third place in the Japanese Grand Prix, has expressed his desire to accelerate discussions about his Formula 1 future in 2025. Recent rumors have linked him to the vacant position at Mercedes, prompting him to reconsider his plans. While Sainz initially wanted to renew his contract with Ferrari, his hopes were dashed when Lewis Hamilton joined the team. Now, Sainz acknowledges the need to intensify negotiations and find the best options for his future.
Although Sainz has been associated with a possible return to Red Bull, Sergio Perez is likely to secure an extension with the team. Additionally, Fernando Alonso has already signed a multi-term renewal with Aston Martin. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has mentioned Sainz’s name as one of the credible options to replace Hamilton at Ferrari. When asked about his future prior to the Japanese Grand Prix, Sainz confirmed that he and his management team are in talks with various teams.
Sainz emphasized the importance of exploring realistic options and finding the best fit for his career. However, he did not provide any specific news or updates regarding his decision. He did, however, stress the need to expedite the process and reach a resolution as soon as possible. Sainz’s chances of securing a top seat with Mercedes have been bolstered by his impressive performance, which includes three podium finishes in three races.
According to Italian media reports, both Sainz and Mercedes are interested in forming a partnership that would see Sainz join George Russell at the team next season. Mercedes views Sainz as the most suitable short-term option and is open to offering a one-plus-one deal. This arrangement would allow Mercedes to maintain flexibility in the driver market, particularly if Max Verstappen becomes available from Red Bull. Additionally, it would provide an opportunity for Mercedes to groom their protege, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is currently competing in Formula 2.
However, it is also worth noting that Sainz may not be willing to accept the conditions proposed by Mercedes. He reportedly desires a guaranteed two-season contract starting from 2025. Unless a compromise can be reached during negotiations, Sainz’s only remaining options would be Sauber, which will transition into Audi in 2026, or Williams.
